LEARNING ABOUT THE WORLD THROUGH BEES

30/10/2026

On Friday, 30 October 2026, the educational toolkit "Small Is Beautiful" was presented during an online event organised by Syros Ermoupolis Environmental Education Centre. The toolkit is one of the key educational outcomes of the "Cyclades' Way of Bee-ing" project and comprises three educational books, three videos and ten children's stories.

The presentation highlighted both the educational philosophy behind the toolkit and its practical applications:

  • Christos Kollias, Head of the Syros Ermoupolis Environmental Education Centre: The development of the toolkit and how it can be used in the classroom and in the field.

  • Angelos Karagiannis, Beelosophy, Scientific Lead of the project: Bees as a remarkable window through which children can discover nature and the world around them, through observation, exploration, creativity and collaboration.

  • Konstantina Kafaloukou, Regional Education Quality Supervisor for the South Aegean: The educational value of the initiative.

  • Christiana Kartsellou, Primary Education School Advisor, Cyclades Directorate: Cooperation and human relationships through the example of Bee societies.

  • Magdalini Niti, Vari Kindergarten, Syros: Experiential activities, pollinator shelters and creative storytelling in early childhood education.

  • Lazaros Asmis, sociologist at Syros Vocational Upper Secondary School, and Golfi Gavriiladaki, economist at Syros General Upper Secondary School: Connecting the theme with the social sciences.

  • Eleni Grilla, philologist at Syros General Upper Secondary School: Fostering empathy and respect through language.

The presentations demonstrated how environmental knowledge can be connected with experiential and interdisciplinary learning, human relationships and students' active participation.

The toolkit is an open educational resource, designed to be used and further developed through the ideas and creative work of teachers and students, with the ambition of making a lasting contribution to school communities.

Warm thanks to everyone who contributed to the development and presentation of this initiative.
