KYTHERIAN MELALEVRIA COMES TO LIFE

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, at the Center of the Earth (Ilion, Attica), Beelosophy and Organization Earth held a unique cultural and gastronomic event dedicated to Melalevria, a traditional sweet from Kythera that highlights how tradition, nutrition, and culture can serve as pillars of sustainability and resilience for local communities.
The presentation was led by Angelos Karagiannis, founder and scientific coordinator of the initiative, Ambassador of Beelosophy, and Chef Konstantinos Mouzakis, Ambassador of Beelosophy, President of Chef's Club of Attica, and Vice President of the European Council of Gastronomy and Oenology.
Through their talks, they showcased the richness of traditional beekeeping and the significance of Kythera's beekeeping heritage, as well as how a "humble" yet ingenious dessert – made from the treasures of the land and the bees such as honey from pressed combs, flour, water, cinnamon, and roasted almonds – becomes a bearer of memory, identity, and culture.
The audience — both Greek and international — took an active role in every step of the preparation, tasted the result, and discovered stories and legends surrounding Kytherian beekeeping – a living reminder that bees have long been guardians of the land and its traditions.
The initiative was implemented in collaboration with Organization Earth, which is transforming its educational centre, (Center of the Earth) into a Climate Refuge in the spirit of the New European Bauhaus. The main goals of the initiative are to strengthen community resilience and reconnect people with nature through environmental education and sustainable development activities.
The event was filmed by Stavros Sofronas, reserving the experience to share with a wider audience.
This activity was carried out within the framework of the initiative "TRADITIONAL BEEKEEPING IN MOVABLE-COMB HIVES (ATTICA & KYHTERA)", under the support and the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.
