A BEE CORNER AT THE 1ST PRIMARY SCHOOL OF CHIOS

Students and teachers* of the 1st Primary School of Chios "IOANNIS PATERAS" utilised the fascinating knowledge that Bees offer us about the environment, culture, biology, ecology and nutrition. As part of the environmental programme and with the additional occasion of BEELOSOPHY's environmental education programme "BEE COSMOS", they brought the world of pollinators to school and implemented a series of experiential activities, proving that the new generation is ready to take action to protect the planet!

• They created the Bee Corner, within the school premises, where painted beehives and 3D paper bees are displayed. This activity not only strengthened their artistic skills, but also helped them visualise the form and characteristics of Bees in a fun and interactive way.
• They prepared pasteli (sesame-seed bar with honey), while having fun, learning about the nutritional and cultural value and secrets of traditional Greek pasteli and its basic ingredients (honey and sesame).
• They visited an apiary, where they talked to beekeepers, saw the life of Bees up close and understood how honey, wax and other hive products are produced. They also visited the local beekeeping cooperative , where they learned about the method of receiving, standardising and delivering honey, tasted local honey and learned about its quality characteristics.
• With passion and imagination, they prepared therapeutic wax ointments with natural beeswax and pure ingredients, aromatic Christmas candles that fill homes with warmth, and handmade Easter candles which convey the light and tradition of the Resurrection.

With these activities, the 1st Primary School of Chios teaches us the collective effort aimed at the common good through selfless acts of love, service and dedication and underlines the symbolic value of Bees for transmitting wisdom and inspiration.
